How to Prepare for Wedding Portraits: Indian Wedding Photographer’s Guide
When it comes to Indian weddings, every detail is steeped in meaning—from precious heirloom jewelry to intricate mehndi. But one thing couples should not overlook is how to prepare for their wedding portraits. As an Indian wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless breathtaking moments—and I can confidently say, a little preparation makes a big difference.
Here’s everything you need to know to look and feel your absolute best during your wedding portraits.
1. Schedule Time for Portraits in Your Wedding Day Timeline
Portraits aren’t something you want to squeeze in “if there’s time.” Plan for them intentionally:
- Golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) offers the most flattering, romantic lighting.
- Or Blue hour-post sunset before it gets completely dark
- Build in buffer time to avoid stress—especially between events like the ceremony and reception.
- Consider a pre-wedding or day-after session for more relaxed, private portraits without the wedding-day time crunch.
Pro-Tip: Make sure you keep a buffer between make up time and the shoot. In the last 15 years I have seen most brides and make up artists underestimate make up and hairdo timings. Moreover plan for delays, costume change time, fine tuning make up, family time after costume is worn, travel time etc.
2. Choose the Right Outfits (and Keep Them Wrinkle-Free)
Luxury Indian bridal fashion is meant to be seen—and photographed.
- Select outfits that reflect your personal style and cultural traditions.
- Have your lehenga, sherwani, and dupattas professionally steamed the day before.
- Bring someone to help manage heavy veils or long trains during portraits—it makes a big difference in the flow of your photos.
Pro-Tip: Select attires you will be very comfortable in, rather than social media trending costumes. Select colors that will go with the time of day, backdrop and your style/vibe. It really helps to discuss these things with the photographer beforehand.
3. Hair & Makeup: Book a Trial, Bring a Kit
Your glam should enhance your natural beauty and photograph beautifully under high-resolution lenses.
- Schedule a trial session with your hair and makeup artist ahead of time.
- Avoid overly dewy or shimmery products; a matte finish photographs best.
- Pack a touch-up kit: blotting paper, lipstick, powder, bobby pins, and safety pins.
4. Practice Posing (But Don’t Overthink It)
You don’t need to be a model to look incredible in portraits.
- Relax and trust your photographer—they’ll guide you through flattering, natural poses.
- Focus on each other. Touch, laugh, whisper—the best portraits come from genuine moments.
- Bonus tip: Practice your smile and posture in the mirror beforehand to build confidence.
5. Showcase Cultural Details That Matter
Your portraits should tell the story of your love and your heritage.
- Include close-ups of your bangles, mangalsutra, or mehndi designs.
- This is where luxury meets tradition, and it’s where magic happens.
- Keep talking-to your spouse and to the photographer and friends. It removes stress and awkwardness of posing.
Pro-Tip: Be yourself as much as possible.
6. Pick the Right Location
Whether you're at a grand ballroom or a lakeside mandap, location sets the tone.
- Look for spots with good light, clean backgrounds, and minimal distractions.
- If your venue has limited options, consider a styled pre-wedding shoot in a different scenic location.
7. Be Weather-Wise
Heat, snow or unexpected rain can impact your portrait session if you're not ready.
- Choose breathable fabrics for summer weddings and have an indoor backup plan.
- Consider seasonal flowers or colors that reflect the local environment for a cohesive look.
8. Trust Your Photographer
At the end of the day, you’re not just hiring someone to “take pictures.” You’re hiring an artist to tell your story.
- Share your must-have shots and inspiration in advance—but stay open to creative spontaneity.
- The best portraits often happen in-between the poses, when you forget the camera is even there.
Pro-Tip: Select reference images which resemble your planned costume, the environment of the shoot venue, poses you would be comfortable with, edit/lighting style you desire (in consultation with the photographer)
Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget the Details
Tiny details matter—especially in luxury photography.
- Rings, footwear, clutch bags, embroidery, and floral accents all deserve a moment in the spotlight.
- We’ll make time to capture flat lays and detail shots that round out your gallery beautifully.
