Some receptions are about the program. Fatima and Ausaaf's Walima was about the people. More than 300 guests filled the ballroom at the Junior League of Austin's Community Impact Center for an evening of heartfelt speeches, live music and a feast from Aga's, and our team had the privilege of documenting all of it.
If you're planning a Muslim wedding in Austin and wondering what a Walima reception can look like at this venue, this is a good place to start.
What Is a Walima?
The Walima is the wedding feast that follows the Nikah, the Islamic marriage ceremony. It celebrates a marriage that has already taken place, sharing the couple's joy with family, friends and the wider community, and it is traditionally centered on hospitality and a generous meal. Where a Nikah is often intimate and focused on the ceremony itself, the Walima is the big gathering: more guests, more food and more time to celebrate.
For a photographer, that difference matters. A Walima is less about choreographed rituals and more about connection: the couple moving from table to table, elders offering duas, and friends who have known the bride or groom for years stepping up to the microphone. Those are the moments we are there to catch.
The Venue: Junior League of Austin's Community Impact Center
The Junior League of Austin's headquarters sits on a wooded tract in Northwest Austin near Loop 360 and Spicewood Springs Road. Opened in 2019, the Community Impact Center has a large divisible ballroom along with a double-height lobby and outdoor terraces, which makes it a practical fit for a 300-person Muslim or South Asian reception. There is a nice bonus for couples, too: rental proceeds support the League's charitable programs for Austin children and families.
From a photography standpoint, the ballroom gives us room to work a crowd this size without getting in guests' way.
An Evening Built Around the Guests
Appetizers and Live Piano
Before the formal program began, guests settled in with passion fruit mojito and appetizers while a live pianist played in the background. It set an easy, unhurried tone, and Fatima and Ausaaf used that window to come down the stairs, mingle and spend real time with their guests rather than rushing through a receiving line. This stretch of a reception tends to produce the most honest candids of the night, and it is one of our favorite parts to photograph.
Speeches from Close Friends
The guests then settled inside and the couple made a grand entry. Fatima and Ausaaf's closest friends took the microphone to toast the couple, with the kind of stories, teasing and sincere words that only people who have known you for years can deliver. Speeches are one reason we cover receptions as a team: one of us stays on the speaker while another watches the couple, because the best frame is often the bride's reaction, not the person holding the mic.
Cake Cutting and a Live Band
After the speeches came the cake cutting, and then a live band followed by a DJ took over and turned the ballroom into a dance floor for the rest of the night.
Grand Sparkler Exit
The couple made a grand exit with the guests, family and friends creating a canopy of sparklers.
The Food: Aga's Restaurant & Catering
Food is the heart of any Walima, and Aga's delivered. The Houston institution has served Indian and Pakistani cuisine since 2001, and it is a name many Texas families already know and trust for big celebrations. For Austin couples, it is a reminder that the right caterer does not have to be local to be the right choice.
Fatima's Bridal Look
Fatima's makeup was by Slay by Sana and her hair by Hair by Mehjabin, a polished look that carried her through hours of greetings, photos and dancing. Her mehndi was done by Austin Henna Artist.

Tips for Planning a Walima in Austin
- Build in a mingling window. A relaxed hour with snacks and music before the program, as Fatima and Ausaaf did, lets you actually talk to your guests and gives your photographer natural moments to work with.
- Share the speech order in advance. Knowing who is speaking and when lets your photo and video team be in position for both the speaker and your reaction.
- Plan coverage for your guest count. With 300 or more guests, one photographer cannot cover the speeches, the couple and the room at the same time. A team makes sure nothing important is missed.
- Protect time for portraits. Schedule couple portraits before guests arrive or during a planned lull so you are not pulled away from the celebration.
- Do a venue walkthrough. Ballroom lighting and layouts vary, so a quick visit with your photographer helps plan where key moments like the cake cutting will happen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Nikah and a Walima? The Nikah is the Islamic marriage ceremony itself. The Walima is the celebratory feast that follows, usually a larger gathering focused on sharing the marriage with family and the community.
How many photographers do I need for a 300-guest Walima? For a reception this size, we recommend a team rather than a single photographer, so that speeches, reactions, family groups and the room can all be covered at once.
Is the Junior League of Austin a good venue for a South Asian or Muslim wedding? Its large divisible ballroom can host big guest counts, and the Northwest Austin location is central for guests coming from across the metro. It worked beautifully for Fatima and Ausaaf's 300-plus guests.
Do you photograph Muslim and Pakistani weddings outside Austin? Yes. We photograph and film Indian, Pakistani, Muslim and fusion celebrations across Austin, Houston and Dallas.
